One of such beauties in India is Lakshadweep. A true hidden gem of India. The word ‘Laksha’ means hundred thousand and ‘dweep’ means island. So the word Lakshadweep basically refers to a ‘hundred thousand islands’. Lakshadweep is an archipelago consisting of various islands just off the coast of Kerala. It is a protected Indian Union territory which has many undiscovered beauties left mostly untouched by most of the external civilization. Lakshadweep is an archipelago of twelve atolls, three reefs and five submerged banks, with a total of about thirty-nine islands and islets.
Lakshadweep has ten inhabited islands, 17 uninhabited islands with attached islets, four newly formed islets and 5 submerged reefs. The main islands are Kavaratti, Agatti, Minicoy, and Amini out of which Agatti has an airport. Everybody, Indian or otherwise, requires a special permit to visit Lakshadweep. By far the easiest way to obtain it is to book a package tour. Foreigners are restricted to the islands of Agatti, Bangaram and Kadmat, plus transit only in Kavaratti. Indians may visit the other islands as well, but accommodation is very limited.
The means of reaching Lakshadweep is through the Air India Flight or through the ships which leave from Kochi. There are three full-service resorts in Lakshadweep, which are also the only places where foreigners can stay. The best time to visit Lakshadweep is considered to be between October to May. Other seasons the islands are less accessible due to monsoons. The Aminidivi subgroup of islands and the Laccadive subgroup of islands together with Minicoy Island form the Coral Islands of India in the Arabian Sea.
All these islands have been built up by corals and have fringing coral reefs very close to their shores. The corals are a major attraction for the tourist. It is one of the four coral reef regions in India. 
The Lakshadweep Archipelago forms a terrestrial ecoregion together with the Maldives and the Chagos. It has over 600 species of marine fishes, 78 species of corals, 82 species of seaweed, 52 species of crabs, 2 species of lobsters, 48 species of gastropods, 12 species of bivalves, 101 species of birds. Water sports activities such as scuba diving, wind surfing, snorkelling, surfing, kayaking, canoeing, water skiing, sport fishing, yachting and night sea voyages are popular activities among tourists.
